Enhanced operational systems for ITAL Group

ITAL Group enhances UK rail operations with digital solutions, integrating Azure AD for Sheila Evolution and digitizing revenue protection processes.

ITAL Group is a UK-based technology company specialising in digital solutions for the transport sector, with a particular focus on rail operations and revenue protection. ITAL has become a trusted partner for numerous UK rail operators, including Greater Anglia, West Midlands Trains, and Transport for London.

IJYI has worked with ITAL across several projects. ITAL’s solutions have significantly improved operational efficiency and customer satisfaction for its clients. For example, West Midlands Trains transitioned from paper to electronic processing with ITAL’s support, enhancing daily operations for their Revenue Protection and Prosecutions teams.

Project: Integrating Azure AD Authentication for Sheila Evolution

This project focuses on integrating Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) authentication into Sheila Evolution, a real-time control room platform that consolidates data from various systems to enhance rail operations management. Developed using ASP.NET MVC and hosted on AWS, Sheila Evolution aims to streamline the management of rolling stock, train crews, and disruptions.

Abelio Greater Anglia (AGA), a key customer of Sheila Evolution, requested the integration of Single Sign-On (SSO) with Azure AD to simplify login processes and enhance security across their systems. Work included creating a reference implementation for Azure AD-integrated authentication within the existing technology stack.

A mechanism to transition existing users from Sheila accounts to Azure AD accounts without losing data or access was developed and a synchronization process to create integrated accounts ensured smooth and continuous access.

Project: Revenue Protection Dashboard for the Rail Industry

Create a mobile application that manages revenue enforcement processes, helping to minimize fare evasion.

Revenue protection activities in the rail industry are traditionally a highly manual process driven by reports, requiring significant human expertise to ensure efficiency. This reliance on human expertise for reporting and decision-making creates inefficiencies that hinder the optimization of resources and schedules.

ITAL sought to improve this process by creating a dashboard that would automate and streamline these activities, offering a more efficient, data-driven approach. The goal was to create a prototype revenue protection dashboard driven by data.

The initial version would use anonymous data but still powerful enough to demonstrate the concept’s potential. By showcasing this prototype, ITAL aimed to secure buy-in from potential customers and stakeholders before investing in the development of a production-ready service.

Project: Digitisation of Rail Industry Processes

At the ITAL Middle East Conference, several delegates from the rail industry expressed the need to digitize their existing processes, with a particular focus on replacing paper forms used for data capture. ITAL was tasked with developing a solution that could streamline this process and integrate data into a more efficient system.

Rail industry delegates requested the digitization of their existing processes, which often involved paper forms for data capture. This manual process created inefficiencies in data storage, retrieval, and reporting. The main challenge was to transition these paper forms into a digital solution that could store data in a database, which could then be used for viewing, reporting, and driving processes.

The goal was to create a prototype/demo app to replace the SAR A1 General Event Form, transitioning from a paper-based system to a web/mobile app data capture solution. This would allow data to be inputted digitally, stored in a database, and used for streamlined reporting and further process automation.
